MEET YOUR HOST

Hi, I’m Mpumi, and this is the story behind Morgan Paradise.

Morgan Paradise began with a love story, a shared dream and a simple desire to build a life a little closer to the sea.

I was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa, while my late husband, Lloyd, was born in Montreal, Canada, and had made California his home.

Our worlds met unexpectedly online in 2016. A few weeks later, we met in person in California and somehow, from that very first date, we simply knew.

We fell in love, and from that day forward, we were inseparable.

We married in Vancouver in May 2017, brought our two families together and began building a beautiful life as a blended family of eight.

Years later, that journey would lead us across continents to a quiet dune overlooking the Indian Ocean, and to the home we would call Morgan Paradise.

We didn’t find our dream home. We found the place where we wanted to build it.

When COVID changed the world, Lloyd and I began thinking seriously about what we wanted the next chapter of our lives to look like.

We wanted somewhere peaceful. Somewhere surrounded by nature. And, most importantly, somewhere we could see the ocean.

South Africa drew us home, and eventually we discovered Paradise Beach.

What we found wasn’t a finished house, but an open piece of land sitting high on a natural dune with the most incredible view of the Indian Ocean. Standing there, looking out towards the water, we knew.

This was it.

From our home in California, thousands of kilometres away, we began designing Morgan Paradise together – imagining the spaces, the feeling and the life we wanted the house to hold.

The home was eventually built directly into the dune, remaining remarkably true to those original plans.

That is why the ocean feels so deeply connected to Morgan Paradise.

The view was never an addition to the house. It was part of the dream from the very beginning.

A shared vision A HOME WITH HEART LLOYD’S CREATIVE TOUCH THE DREAM MORGAN PARADISE DEEPLY CONNECTED balustrade SHAPED BY HAND SHARED WITH YOU

LLOYD’S TOUCH

Some of the most beautiful details have a story behind them.

Lloyd had a wonderfully creative spirit and an eye for finding beauty and possibility in unexpected things.

Some of the most meaningful pieces at Morgan Paradise still carry his fingerprints.

The timber balustrade along the staircase began as a piece of wood that had come from the ocean. Lloyd brought it home, worked on it himself and transformed it into something both functional and beautiful – a piece of the coast becoming part of our home.

Then there is the solid timber dining table.

Lloyd searched for months before finding exactly the right one from a family in Port Elizabeth. Today, it sits at the heart of Morgan Paradise – a place for long meals, conversations, laughter and the kind of moments that make people want to stay at the table just a little longer.

Much like Lloyd himself, it has become a conversation starter.

The Heart Behind Morgan Paradise

And then, there’s Mpumi’s touch.

Where Lloyd brought an instinct for unusual finds and creative details, I bring my love of order, warmth and thoughtful hospitality.

I’ve embraced the industrial character of Morgan Paradise while adding simple décor and finishing touches that soften the spaces and make them feel welcoming.

I’m an organiser by nature, so you’ll find that reflected throughout the house too – in spaces that are thoughtfully arranged, practical and equipped with the things guests may need during their stay.

For me, hospitality lives in those little details.

My hope is that when you arrive at Morgan Paradise, you don’t simply feel that you have checked into accommodation.

I want you to feel that, for a little while, you’ve come home.

The story behind the home, in her own words.

WHAT DOES HOSPITALITY MEAN TO YOU?

As an African woman, hospitality to me is deeply rooted in Ubuntu – the spirit of kindness, humanity and togetherness.

When someone enters my home, I want them to feel that kindness from the moment they walk through the door. It should live in the space, in the little details, in everything they touch and in the way they are welcomed.

For me, hospitality is an exchange of kindness. You arrive with your own kindness, you receive kindness while you are here, and you leave a little of your kindness behind.

Why the Eastern Cape and Paradise Beach?

During COVID, my husband and I began looking online for the perfect place to call home. We were looking at the map, coming down from Cape Town along the coast, and I said to him, “Look somewhere in the Eastern Cape.”

The Eastern Cape was already close to my heart. My mother was from there, and growing up, I listened to her stories about the land, the mountains and how she would go into nature, speak to it and share her dreams. I believe that is where my roots are planted, and I always felt that one day I would return to where my mother’s dream began.

Then we saw the name Paradise Beach.

Something about the name immediately drew us in. My husband, who is from Canada, was looking for somewhere with absolute peace—a place with gentle weather, fresh air and a sense of calm. When he saw the name, he said, “What more could it be? The name says it all.”

And when we finally arrived, we realised the name wasn’t just a name. We could actually feel the paradise.

For me, it was a return to my roots. For him, it was the peace he had been searching for.

And somehow, Paradise Beach became the place where both our dreams met.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE HOUSE?

My favourite thing about the house is the view. The ocean, the constant gushing of the waves, the sunrise and sunset—I don’t think I could ever grow tired of it. Being able to walk to the beach and feel so connected to nature is something I treasure every day.

But there is something even more special about this house: it is exactly what my husband and I dreamed of and designed together. We were involved in every detail, and so much of what you see is a reflection of our vision. It is different, and that is exactly what we wanted.

From sunrise to sunset, there is so much to see—the ocean, the mountains, the bush and the ever-changing light. And perhaps what makes me happiest is that we have built our home without taking the wildness away. The birds and animals still come, and nature continues to live around us.

We didn’t come here to conquer nature. We found our little place within it.

WHAT DETAIL OF THE HOUSE MAKES YOU THINK OF LLOYD?

There are two details in this house that will always remind me of Lloyd.

The first is the name outside: Morgan Paradise.

When we were designing the house, we did everything together. But one day he asked me if there was anything I would allow him to decide entirely on his own. I thought about it and said, “The name outside. That one is yours.”

He was so excited because he knew he had a surprise waiting for me. When he finally put the name on the wall and I saw Morgan Paradise, I knew immediately – it was perfect.

The second is the balustrade on the staircase. We chose the piece together, but he worked on it himself. He was so detailed and passionate about it, showing me all the little things he found fascinating in the wood.

So when I arrive and see the name, I feel his presence.

And when I walk up those stairs, holding the balustrade that his hands worked on, it feels like I am touching a little piece of his soul.

WHY THE NAME MORGAN PARADISE?

Morgan Paradise represents peace, calmness, and the everlasting love we have for one another.

It is a reflection of our journey, the crooked roads that eventually brought us together, and the life we created as one.

For me, Morgan Paradise is more than the name of our home. It is a reminder of us, our love, and the beautiful life we built together.

YOUR PERFECT MORGAN PARADISE MORNING?

I wake up, draw back the curtains and slide open the door onto the deck. With a warm cup of coffee in hand, I step outside and watch the sun slowly emerge as it rises into the morning sky.

I listen to the gentle, ever-present gushing of the waves from the everlasting ocean, while the fresh sea breeze brushes softly across my face.

And for a moment, I simply breathe, take it all in, and feel grateful for another morning, another day, and the beautiful reminder that life is good, life goes on, and there is always something to be grateful for.

WHY MORGAN PARADISE

A home built from love. A story that continues.

Lloyd may no longer be here physically, but pieces of him remain everywhere.

In the name.
In the wood he transformed.
In the table he searched for.
In the poetry he wrote.
In the design we created together.
And in the feeling that fills this home.

Today, welcoming guests into Morgan Paradise allows me to continue sharing something we created together – a home by the sea made for slowing down, reconnecting and making beautiful memories of your own.

Welcome to Morgan Paradise,
Mpumi
